Our retinaldehyde is encapsulated inside a crystalline molecule called cyclodextrin. It has a water-loving exterior, and a water-hating interior, inside which snugly fits water-hating retinaldehyde. Retinaldehyde isn’t very soluble in water, so the cyclodextrin helps it to easily dissolve in water-based creams. The cyclodextrin also physically protects the retinaldehyde: like a warm hug protecting you from the world. This combats oxygen and free radicals trying to steal retinaldehyde’s power.
